A new bold move for PlayStation’s mature IP

In a little bit of a promising yet vastly more interesting twist, Lego Horizon Adventures brings a family-friendly twist on the post-apocalyptic world of Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s coming to all platforms, on November 14, for PS5, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. This adventure raises questions about how mature gaming IPs are reimagined for younger audiences.

Rebuilding Aloy’s World, Brick by Brick

In this radical departure from game design conventionalism, LEGO apparently does everything to make the world it built for the game with Lego Horizon Adventures out of actual LEGO bricks. Every feature, ranging from landscapes to machines, is handcrafted with advice from the Master Builders of LEGO to gain an added layer of realism. Studio Gobo’s animation director Luismi Herrera admits it even follows the actual LEGO brick color palette; it’s a first level of visual authenticity.

Key Visual Features:

The game shall feature a completely built LEGO brick world with authentic color schemes of LEGO to buildable in-game assets that strongly resemble the real sets, as well as breathtaking details in environments.

Adapt a Mature Narrative to All

It re-tells the origin story of Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn using a softer approach, combining heaviness of emotions by providing humor and ethos that characterizes LEGO, adjusted into family-friendly serious moments without losing the core idea in self-discovery and belonging.

Building for the future: PlayStation’s Family-Friendly Strategy

This is a take from the gaming giant that portrays the strategic steps taken by PlayStation to get its mature franchises more appealing. According to Stephane Varrault, design director at Guerrilla Games, the game can be played and enjoyed by younger players but holds layers of sophistication to appeal to fans from other ages.

Final Thoughts

While the opening hour of the game may pose a struggle in terms of how it would balance the playfulness of LEGO and the deepness of Horizon, there’s scope for an interesting gaming experience with this ambitious visual design and promising customization features.

Perhaps, this is where IP adaptation will finally be successful. It could set the semblance for more involvement with mature gaming franchises in the LEGO universe as well.
