Batman: Arkham Shadow Review – A VR Masterpiece with Flaws

Batman: Arkham Shadow Review – A VR Masterpiece with Flaws

2024 was a mixed bag for fans of the Arkhamverse. While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League disappointed many, Batman: Arkham Shadow, an entirely VR-exclusive title, has been one to redeem the franchise in the eyes of many. There was skepticism about how an Arkham game could turn out in VR, but surprisingly, it’s a worthy addition to the Arkham series, providing a completely immersive gaming experience that feels authentic to the iconic franchise.

Plot: A New Threat in Gotham

Arkham Shadow starts on July 4th between Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum, when the mysterious Rat King and his apocalyptic cult have laid siege on Gotham City. Players will take on the role of Batman, solving cryptic clues, battling henchmen, and dismantling the Rat King’s terrifying plans.

Gameplay: Arkham Combat, Reimagined for VR

Fans of the old Arkham games will be happy to know that Arkham Shadow translates the franchise’s trademark combat into VR faithfully.

  • Intuitive Combat System: The game uses visual cues to guide players on when to block and attack foes. Mechanics such as ducking knife attacks or stunning armored enemies with Batman’s cape add layers of strategy.
  • Immersive Detective Vision: One of the fan-favorite features of previous titles returns in Detective Vision. Players can now analyze crime scenes and plan stealthy takedowns.

The dynamic first-person melee combat in the game is satisfying while also serving as an unexpected workout.

Atmosphere and Storytelling: True to Arkham’s Legacy

Arkham Shadow gives the moody, dark atmosphere fans have come to expect with impressive attention to detail and Easter eggs for longtime players. The narrative is full of twists that add depth to Gotham lore. Without giving away spoilers, the storyline is compelling enough to stand side-by-side with the best in the Arkham series.

Flaws: Bugs and Backtracking

While Arkham Shadow excels in many aspects, it falters in execution:

  • Regular Bugs: Progression glitches, unresponsive controls, and even Batman getting stuck in walls will sometimes be found. Thankfully, frequent check-points mitigate frustrations.
  • Repetitive Backtracking: The game usually forces the player to retread areas in the Blackgate prison setting and therefore lessens the excitement.

Additional Features: Side Content and Upgrades

For completionists, there are plenty of side quests, collectible hunts, and combat challenges to engage in. The upgrade system enhances Batman’s abilities and provides incentives to explore every nook and cranny.
