343 Industries Branding Comes to an End as a New Era for the Iconic Franchise, Now Called Halo Studios

This will open up the Halo universe as fans have never witnessed before. In a breakup announcement at the 2024 Halo World Championships, rebranded 343 Industries as Halo Studios revealed plans that promise to reshape the future of the beloved sci-fi shooter franchise.

Several games in works at Halo Studios

Future excitement for Halo fans. The studio confirmed multiple new Halo projects in works and revealed the strategy. Again, not a lot of information is available on the individual projects, but it ends the previously established pattern for the studios of only making massive, one-off titles.

Joining Unreal Engine 5

The New Technological Frontier

A long-rumored move, Halo is now officially jumping into the world of Unreal Engine 5. Such a switch from proprietary Slipspace Engine to be used in Halo Infinite represents an enormous technological leap for the franchise.

Project Foundry: Glimpse into Halo New Frontier

In case the hype surrounding Unreal Engine 5 wasn’t enough to land Halo on a higher-level, record-breaking pedestal, the studio has been working on “Project Foundry,” a non-game project acting as a proving ground and really showcasing the visual and technical possibilities for future Halo titles.

Some highlights from Project Foundry:

  • Breathtaking Halo-esque environments, from familiar Pacific Northwest-inspired vistas to Flood-infested worlds
  • Master Chief being the most detailed rendition during the Combat Evolved era
  • Extremely intense combat scenarios, like a head-to-head encounter with Master Chief against an Elite

The Rationale for the Change

Justification for Improved Developability and Meeting of Player Demands

Switching to Unreal Engine 5 is not just about graphics. As stated by Pierre Hintze, lead at Halo Studios, this would serve as a chance where the team will actually get a change of pace in developing the game rather than being bogged down by the engine itself. This switch would now:

  • Speed up the pipeline of developments
  • Enables faster output of new content and updates
  • Simplifies hiring process and getting new talent on board

What This Means for Halo Infinite

Nothing to worry about here. Halo Infinite will still receive continued support through more Operations and Forge mode releases in the coming time frame. Though this is so, one can see that the future of Halo will soon be realized beyond Infinite, that is with Unreal Engine 5.

A New Chapter, Not the Final Page

The spirit of Halo remains, though new projects are still in the early development stages. Quoting from the Xbox blog, “this is the start, not the end game.”

The Spirit of Halo Remains

Even as technology continues to morph, however, Halo’s DNA remains a constant. “The spirit of Halo is more than just visuals,” Art Director Chris Matthews said. “It’s the lore. It’s the physics. Playing as the Chief, you’re this huge tank of a soldier-it’s the way that he moves, feels.”

Looking Ahead

As we eagerly await more news on these new Halo projects, it is clear the future of Halo is bright, diverse, and tech-fueled. With several games in the works and with the force of Unreal Engine 5 in its corner, Halo Studios are good to take Master Chief’s saga to a whole new level.
