The Long Road to the Shire Gets Longer
Attention all Hobbit enthusiasts and wannabe Shire-dwellers! If you’ve been holding out with bated breath for the chance to live your Halfling fantasies in “Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game” (yes, that’s the whole mouthful of a title), well, it looks like you’re going to have to hold on just a little bit longer. Private Division has just announced that our trip to the Shire has been pushed back until 2025.
Between 2024 and 2025: The Tale of a Hobbit
Now, before you storm off to chow down second breakfast and contend with this delay, let’s put it all into perspective. The release window originally slated was a pretty vagary “2024,” which can mean anywhere from January 1st to December 31st. After all, this delay may be as brief as one day! Of course you shouldn’t get your hopes up that this will be the reality – in reality, probably best to assume we’re looking at something of a wait.
What’s a Hobbit to Do in the Meantime?
While we may have to wait a little while longer to tend our virtual gardens and share pints at the Green Dragon, there’s still plenty to look forward to:
Mark Your Calendars: A Hobbit Day Showcase
Private Division is giving us a consolation prize for eager fans. On 22 September – a date any true Tolkien fan will instantly recognize – they are hosting the ‘A Hobbit Day Showcase’. It promises to give us a second glimpse into the cozy world of ‘Tales of the Shire’. Although this will not reduce the wait, at least it will make it more enjoyable!

The Promise of Shire Life
For those who might have missed the early hype, “Tales of the Shire” is not a quest or the final fight against a dark lord. Rather, it is a love letter to simple pleasures in Hobbit life-fishing, gardening, sharing meals with neighbors, and such. It is a game promising to be like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day.
Why the Excitement?
You probably think that there is much excitement over the game about daily life of Hobbit. Indeed, in a world of great-wollen gaming and constant action, at times what we do not so secretly need is a virtual break to a place where the biggest worry is whether your tomatoes will win first prize at the fair.
Even for those of us who are not nearly zealous fans of The Lord of the Rings, the allure of the Shire speaks to something deep within us. It’s all about comfort, community, and simple joys – something we could all use a little more of in our lives.

Looking Ahead to 2025
While the wait may be a tad disappointing, in many cases it often is a testament to the fact that developers are taking their time with their product to ensure its polish and perfection. When we finally step into Shire, hopefully it will be an experience worth the wait.
A game simply known as “Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game” will release for Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime in 2025. Perhaps the books are due for a re-read, the movies need a marathon re-watch, or Elvish should be practiced. Because, indeed, good things do come to those who wait, and Hobbits are nothing if not patient.
