The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Review: A Princess's Adventure with Mixed Echoes

Echoes of Wisdom” is an experiment in the vast tapestry of The Legend of Zelda series, and it brings forward a bold first-time entry into the main role for players as Princess Zelda herself. Does this long-awaited role reversal bring the magic that we’ve come to expect from the franchise? Let’s dive into Hyrule’s latest adventure and uncover its treasures and trials.

A Familiar World with a Twist

The Setup: Link’s Mysterious Disappearance

“Echoes of Wisdom” opens with a clever bait-and-switch: You play as Link, prepared to square off against a classic Link to the Past-style Ganon. Just as it seems you’re about to triumph, the earth swallows your green-clad hero. Enter Zelda, there to save the day and her kingdom.

The Mission: Closing the Rifts

Hyrule is under threat again, this time threatened by mystical rifts that consume pieces of land and people. As Zelda, you know your quest: to close these rifts, free the citizens who are trapped-including Link-and uncover the source of this new darkness.

Gameplay: Echoes of Innovation and Familiarity

Zelda’s Unique Abilities

  1. Item Conjuring: Just like “Tears of the Kingdom,” Zelda can conjure objects to help her solve puzzles and get past obstacles.
  2. Enemy Conjuring: You can summon out non-boss enemies to fight at your side in what is a weird twist to both series. Moblin buddy, anyone?
  3. Zelda to Link Transformation: Zelda can temporarily transform into Link for more ‘conventional’ combat, making encounters more strategic.

The Smoothie Obsession

Finally, the game takes a smoothie-making mechanic fairly out of left field with “Echoes of Wisdom,” which tasks you to collect ingredients during your travels and blend them for an effect. It’s rather similar to the cooking system seen in “Breath of the Wild” but minus the complexity.

Visual and Technical Details

Charming Toy-Like Aesthetic

The game opts for the cute, dioramaesque art direction of the “Link’s Awakening” remake. It is a visual feast that really brings the magic of 2D Zelda as a 3D space.

Bumps in Performance

However, similar to its graphical counterpart, “Echoes of Wisdom” suffers from its frame rate. One can see those bumps especially on world traversal and sometimes affecting gameplay.

The Highs and Lows of Dungeon Design

Return to Classic Structure

“Echoes of Wisdom” reminds the fan of the dearly missed overworld/dungeon structure, a welcome respite for players nostalgic for more classical Zelda designs.

Alternative “Still World” Chapters

Prior to each dungeon, the player must guide pieces of the landscape floating about in an empty space, adding some novel twists on pre-dungeon traditions.

Dungeon Disappointment

While they are back to their best form, the dungeons themselves – despite returning to the standard of form – have much less in the way of thematic uniqueness than might be hoped from old-school fans. The puzzles are occasionally smart, but often feel repetitive and much less inspired than ever throughout the series.

Verdict: A Mixed Pottage of Old and New

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is an experiment that does not quite live up to the great heights of its predecessors. While playing as Zelda and the item conjuring mechanic are at least newly discovered experiences in gameplay, the whole package is rather underwhelming compared to the recent masterpieces in Zelda.

Pros:

  • Playing as Zelda is refreshing
  • Creative item conjuring and enemy summoning mechanics
  • Visually nice

Cons:

  • Repetitive dungeon layout
  • Crashes
  • Too much reliance on uninspired rewards, too many ingredients

For Zelda zealots, this “Echoes of Wisdom” is worth looking at, an effort at reprising the good old formula, and making Princess Zelda shine as she deserves it. For the new fans of the game, something more engaging cannot be found; if they were looking for another game-changing installment, then it must be pretty weakly veiled here.

Score: 7/10 – A good adventure game that fails to hit the series’ higher points.
