The Witcher 4: How Ciri’s Adventure Could Revitalize Gwent

The Witcher 4: How Ciri's Adventure Could Revitalize Gwent

The Game Awards 2024 brought one of the year’s most anticipated announcements with The Witcher 4. Where it was revealed that Ciri would be the new face of CD Projekt Red’s beloved franchise. While fans are eagerly waiting for this next chapter in The Witcher saga. Another title in the universe is going to gain a lot from this new development: Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.

The Current State of Gwent

October 2023 marked the final balance update for Gwent, which was the last push for the game’s active development phase. Launched in 2018, the game has always had a loyal fan base, but the number of players has been slowly decreasing. The coming of The Witcher 4 might be what Gwent needs to turn its fortunes around.

A New Chapter for Both Games

The announcement trailer of The Witcher 4 shows a darker world where Ciri is the center, and a lot of time has passed since the events of The Witcher 3. This temporal shift creates perfect conditions for Gwent’s revival, offering opportunities to introduce new characters, storylines, and mechanical innovations to the card game.

The Gwent Legacy

Gwent within The Witcher 3 was a nice surprise to most, including the developers themselves at CD Projekt Red. What was at first a simple minigame turned into a phenomenon that deserved a standalone release. With accessibility, strategic depth, and a rich connection to The Witcher lore, it is one of those games that is unique and struck the hearts of its fans across the world.

Future Possibilities

The revival of Gwent is opened up by the introduction of The Witcher 4. New character cards of Ciri’s companions and adversaries may be the key to reviving the game. Innovative mechanics that reflect the changed world may be brought into the updated timeline, and cross-game promotions can bring players to play both titles.

The New Era of The Witcher

Now that Ciri steps into the shoes of the main character, The Witcher is boldly moving into new territory. That, however, is not just a change in protagonist but more of a change in the entire universe. At least initially, in terms of Geralt’s lack of exposure, that is an unnatural move from what people grew accustomed to. Speculative theories ascribe a role to Geralt, though: either probably a mentor figure in the main game or even in the updated Gwent content.

The release of The Witcher 4 could also be a golden opportunity for Gwent’s rebirth. With Ciri in her new adventure, an upgraded Gwent would certainly ride on the wave of interest in the The Witcher series. This would be the ideal card game connecting the old to the new and keeping what’s familiar yet refreshing with the content inspired by The Witcher 4.

Looking Ahead

Awaiting more details from The Witcher 4 will certainly keep the idea of Gwent reviving a very fascinating one. The success of both games has always been tightly entwined, so this new chapter will without a doubt further tighten that. The release of The Witcher 4 might be just what Gwent needs to go back to its former self through new card sets, updated mechanics, or cross-game features.

What might Gwent have to do with The Witcher 4? Would you like to witness an overhaul of the card game, but this time based on Ciri’s story? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
